Wake County Is Changing How Often Homes Are Revalued

If you own a home in Wake County, there’s an important change on the horizon: the county is shifting to a more frequent revaluation schedule. The next revaluation is set for January 1, 2027, and after that, assessments will occur every two years.
This new schedule is in response to the booming growth Wake County is seeing. Homes have appreciated rapidly, and officials want to prevent the kind of “sticker shock” many experienced when property values suddenly jumped.
Why This Matters
Your tax bill is based on your assessed value. If your assessment is off, you could be paying too much.
More frequent revaluations help assessments stay closer to current market conditions, instead of lagging several years behind.
That doesn’t automatically mean your taxes will increase at the same rate — the tax rate is set separately.
What You Can Do to Be Prepared
Watch local sales. Pay attention to what homes like yours are selling for in your area.
Review your assessment notice. When your new value arrives, double-check square footage, lot details, improvements, and condition.
Know how to appeal. If you believe your assessed value is too high, you’ll have opportunities to challenge it.
How I Can Help
When revaluation notices go out, I’ll be pulling comparable sales for neighbors, reviewing valuations, and helping you decide whether to challenge. You don’t have to figure this out alone.
If you’d like me to keep an eye on your property’s new value and walk you through your options, just message me or leave your address here. Let’s make sure you’re paying a fair tax, not a dollar more.
